Silicon Carbide Telescopic Dosimeter

A dosimeter is an instrument capable of measure dose and/or the type of ionizing radiation. There is a special interest to introduce new methods and devices which can more accurately describe, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the local energy deposits resulting from the application of ionizing radiation in regions with a scale smaller than those which are generally of interest in radiotherapy. Further desirable aspects are the capability of providing a reliable measurement of the atomic number and/or the state of charge of the incident radiation and also a good resistance to the radiation damage. These goals can be achieved by using the Silicon Carbide Monolithic Telescopic Detector.
State of development
Prototype
Industrial application
Medical physics (radiotherapy treatment verification and quality assurance in therapy and diagnostic systems), radiation hardness (radiation damage on materials and electronics), radiation processing and radiation-induced sterilization (food and medical instrumentation). New features as remote and real-time reading allow the radiation monitoring also in harsh environments as reactors, facilities of high energy physics, landfills and water treatment plants.
Advantage factor
Compared to more modern dosimeters and micro-dosimeters (ionization chambers, or solid-state detectors) SiC devices are very resistant to radiation damage and is therefore able to withstand intense particle flows. According to the present invention, the monolithic telescopic detector can be easy manufactured with the further advantage to allows a plurality of detectors to be incorporated in two-dimensional arrays, so as to form for example pixel devices for imaging applications.
